You might choose to try Adobe Lightroom or Apple Aperture, rather than go the full-blown photoshop route. I cast my lot with Aperture, but in retrospect, I sort of wish I'd gone Lightroom. Either way, it's much more sophisticated than iPhoto, and aimed squarely at photography... and way, WAY cheaper than buying Photoshop. Great goals!
