I went to the Please Touch today (the first time in 25 years) for a the press preview of their new exhibit and spotted a relic from my childhood memories – the elephant made from old toys. Of all things that amazed me at this museum when I was young, this was the biggest marvel.

A Thursday afternoon trip with two co-workers to a meeting in Bucks County. It was such a pleasure to ride in the backseat, since so often I’m the driver.

My beloved Griswold skillet. I bought this guy for $25 at a Goodwill in Portland a year ago. There was also a smaller Griswold with it for the same price that I passed over, thinking that I could only afford one. Having discovered how much better old cast iron is than new, I deeply regret not buying them both.

It’s felt so grey in our apartment lately. However, this morning as I was getting dressed, suddenly there was light streaming through the windows. I grabbed my camera so that I’d have a reminder that it’s not always so gloomy.

The front of Sue’s Produce. I buy a whole lot of fruits and vegetables here, particularly in the winter when the farmers’ markets aren’t as exuberant. Tonight I picked up a red cabbage, one carrot, an orange, a lime and a pack of freshly made corn tortillas for $5.30. The cabbage, lime and carrot went into a version of this slaw.

If we ever move away from Center City Philadelphia, this store will be one of the top five things I will miss most. In addition to the fact that their prices are really good and the produce is wonderfully fresh, if you’re short a dollar or two, they’ll just tell you to pay them the next time you come in. I find that kind of friendly trust and familiarity to be in dwindling supply in these times and so appreciate having it at this little market.
